A Culture of Coaching
Coaching builds trust and respect between teammates through an understanding that, while there’s a high level of accountability, that person is deeply invested in helping you grow.
Its extends, then, to how teammates grow relationships with our clients and independently grow as professionals...as people.
Coaching people is something that should be done constantly and strategically to raise the ability level of everyone around us. While done constantly, it should also be done with the goal of getting someone up to a certain level, on specific tasks, so that they can do those tasks on their own at a high-level eventually. Coaching also teaches and reinforces what actions and details should be focused on the most—which are the most impactful to do extremely well.
Coaching should empower the teammates to problem solve independently and learn the process or system that allows them to do a specific function. As a coach/leader/mentor, we must provide the system, knowledge, and tools to give that teammate a big-picture understanding of why we do something the way that we do it and why its important to our company and/or our client. If someone fully understands the importance of it (why), they’ll more likely be able to understand the process. We want to coach so teammates have more than just an answer, but an understanding.
Coaching sets a clear path for growth and improvement, while also giving the teammates a higher level of perspective and ownership in their role. With frequent and consistent communication among the team, others are then able to coach at a peer to peer level. This cultural shift at all levels leads to better results and more autonomous accountability--its a communal effort.
Coaching with regularity reinforces all the cultural ideals we look to establish in every teammate at every level. It improves our core cultural principles of problem solving, sales and personal growth, customization, and partnership. When everyone speaks the same language and we have the same standards, the culture can continue to grow and improve exponentially.
Since the flywheel is such an important part of our culture, coaching can be looked at as having the same impact within the team. The more the standards are understood, the more teammates are seeking the best out of each other and lifting each other up, the more efficient the coaching process becomes, and the more efficient our teams become. Shared systems increase accountability and frequent communication leads to clarity between teammates at all levels. Coaching helps bring every person into alignment on our goals.
